SINGAPORE – As dining in remains off-limits for now, some food and beverage owners have forged ahead with new virtual brands that are available only for delivery and/or takeaway.

They include Dishoom, which offers contemporary Indian cuisine, and Ciao Chow, which serves pasta.

Both brands are by Mr Shaun Leong, 35, and Ms Joanne Toh, 28 – the couple behind Wildfire Burgers in Bencoolen Street, which made a comeback in June last year after closing in 2019.

ASHEVILLE – The S&W Market, Asheville’s first food hall, has announced plans to open to the public June 16 at 11:30 a.m. The collection of independent restaurants and beverage purveyors takes over the iconic S&W Building at 56 Patton Ave.

Built in 1929, the historic downtown building was designed by architect Douglas Ellington and remains a showcase of classic art deco beauty and intricate architectural details. In 2017, the building was purchased by Ellington’s two nephews, Douglas and Kenneth Ellington, of Ellington Realty Group.

Even as Europe’s economic outlook is rapidly improving, European Central Bank policymakers decided on Thursday to maintain their “very accommodative” monetary stance.

Governments are lifting lockdown restrictions and the vaccine rollout has sped up, which has led to a bounce in the services industry and “ongoing dynamism” in manufacturing, Christine Lagarde, president of the central bank, told reporters at a news conference in Frankfurt.

“We expect economic activity to accelerate in the second half of this year as further containment measures are lifted,” she said.

A chef on a cross-Canada tour is trying to help pioneer a new culinary frontier, despite restrictions on serving cannabis.

Travis Petersen has partnered with Russell Hendrix Restaurant Equipment and Supplies to teach an introduction to culinary cannabis.

The course, open to culinary professionals, teaches its students about the different parts of the plant, safety practices and methods for creating extractions.

Five students attended the class Thursday night in Victoria, the first stop in the tour of 10 Canadian cities.
