The European plant-based food sector has skyrocketed 49 percent in the last two years, a new study finds.
The study has been published by the Smart Protein project in partnership with ProVeg International. It analyses ‘previously unseen Nielsen data in order to gain unprecedented insight into European consumer habits’.
The report uses supermarket data from 11 European countries over the past three years. It says it represents the ‘biggest and most accurate overview of plant-based consumer habits in Europe’.
Plant-based food sector
It found the European plant-based sector has reached a total sales value of €3.6 billion, and that sales of plant-based milk lead the sector in most countries.
The study also says the German plant-based meat sector has soared by a staggering 226 percent, and vegan cheese sales have increased by 77 percent.
Moreover, in Poland, the sales value of plant-based-milk spiked 62 percent over the past two annual periods.
‘Tremendous growth of plant-based food’
Dr. Kai-Brit Bechtold is the Senior Consumer Research Scientist at ProVeg International. In a statement sent to PBN, she said: “Finally, we see the tremendous growth of plant-based food in Europe over the last few years reflected in numbers.
“This report clearly reveals the huge increase in sales of plant-based food and offers a green light to the food industry in terms of pursuing more plant-based options.”

Moreover, Bram Meijer is the Regional Marketing Director EMEA of Beyond Meat. He added: “Beyond Meat strives towards the goal of making plant-based meat more accessible to everyone. We believe that no one should have to choose between taste and sustainability.
“This report by Nielsen validates that demand for plant-based meat is on the rise. We aim to meet this growing demand by offering consumers the nutritional and environmental benefits of plant-based proteins.”
