After 6-year wait, Asian Foods celebrates full opening on Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — To the crashes of a cymbal and gongs on a traditional tanggu drum, lion dancers shimmied and pranced through the aisles of Asian Foods on Saturday morning. The commotion delighted shoppers and workers at the Mariners Harbor supermarket at its official grand opening celebration at 2343 Forest Ave.

With support from his longtime friends and business partners Eric Moon and Eric Zheng, Arnold Yeung is opening his first restaurant after working 10 years in the Victoria restaurant business.

Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant is preparing to open its doors in Clive on Dec. 5.

Driving the news: The Illinois-based chain is opening its first Iowa location in the former Granite City location.

  • The restaurant’s goal is to bring a taste of Napa, Calif. to the Midwest by focusing heavily on its wines, including tastings, pairings with each dish and a monthly wine club.

Long-awaited south-side Mexican restaurant nears opening

A new Mexican restaurant that’s opening in the coming weeks in south Sioux Falls is a blend of two families and their favorite recipes.

La Plaza Fiesta Mexican Restaurant is putting the final touches on its space in a retail center at 521 W. 85th St. in front of Walmart, and inspections are scheduled for next week.

“Our dream is to be open before Dec. 1,” co-owner Krystal Hernandez said. “So we’ll see how much we can get done in the next few days. We’re going to be here all day, every day and getting stuff finalized.”

Damansara, the first restaurant from Malaysian chef Tracy Goh, is opening in San Francisco

In the United States, the best known Malaysian dish is arguably laksa, the comforting and aromatic noodle soup. But Tracy Goh wants dishes like otak-otak, curry puffs and nasi lemak to share the stage — and by doing so, broaden Malaysian cuisine’s reach in America.

All of these dishes will be served at Goh’s first restaurant, Damansara, opening Oct. 19 in San Francisco’s Noe Valley neighborhood (1781 Church St.). It will be one of the Bay Area’s few restaurants devoted to Malaysian food.

Damansara will, of course, serve laksa, but Goh hopes diners will share many of the small plates
